WRIST FRACTURE

WRIST FRACTUREForced hyperextension causes most wrist and forearm fractures. The radius is the most commonly fractured bone in the body. These fractures usually occur as a result of one outstretching an arm to break a fall. Once the hand reaches the ground, the force is transmitted up through the forearm. Scaphoid (the most frequently injured carpal bone) fractures occur more frequently in young athletic individuals than do radial fractures.

A Smith's Fracture occurs as a result of a sudden impact against the radius.

A Colles" Fracture usually occurs when the flexing of the hand is used to cushion a fall. The radius is broken and it occasionally affects the ulna.
