CONDITIONS OF THE WRIST
ARTHRITIS
Arthritis is a disease that slowly destroys joints causing inflammation
and stiffening. Osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease is
advanced arthritis that starts to break down the actual bones of
the joint.
CAST REMOVAL
Often after cast removal, additional wrist stabilization is necessary
during the healing and physical therapy process - especially if
the wrist and/or hand are severely weakened.
CONTUSION
A wrist contusion is the result of a direct blow to a structure
of the wrist causing tenderness, decreased range of motion and/or
inflammation.
TENDINITIS
Tendinitis is an inflammation or slight tearing of the tendons.
There is tenderness around the involved tendons, and passive stretching
magnifies the pain. Overuse is the most common cause of tendinitis.
CUMULATIVE TRAUMA DISORDER (CTD) OF THE WRIST
Cumulative trauma disorders (CTD) are physical problems affecting
joints and soft tissues (muscles, tendons and nerves). Cumulative
trauma disorders most often affect the wrists and can damage fingers
and elbows. Limited range of motion or a reduction in the ability
to grip objects can occur if a CTD is left untreated.
Discomfort, swelling or muscle fatigue that does not disappear
with rest are the beginning signs of a CTD. The aching muscle may
feel as if it has been strained or overused. Another sign is tingling
or numbness. All these symptoms may become chronic and can result
in muscle weakness and nerve problems.
