Osgood-Schlatter's
Disease
Definition:
Osgood-Schlatter's Disease is inflammation of the bone and cartilage
at the tibial turbercle. This causes excessive pulling on the patellar
tendon at the attachment on the top of the tibia. Occurs mostly
in adolescents where the blood supply to the growing bone cannot
keep pace with the stresses placed upon it.
Symptoms:
Common symptoms of Osgood-Schlatters's Disease include pain, swelling
and tenderness at the top of the shin. Pain is usually lingering
and is aggravated with exercise.
Causes:
This disease develops most commonly between the ages of 10 and 15
years, usually in boys. Results from alignment slippage at the cartilage
growth center on the tibial tuberosity which leads to pulling on
the patellar tendon.
Treatment:
Excessive athletic activity, especially deep knee bending, should
be avoided. Symptoms usually disappear after several weeks or months.
Occasionally the leg is immobilized.
