Lateral Epicondylitis
Definition:
Lateral Epicondylitis is an inflammation, irritation or slight tearing
of the tendons or muscles on the outer (lateral) side of the elbow.
Symptoms:
Common symptoms include pain, swelling, redness or irritation on
the outer, back side of the forearm. Pain can extend down the elbow
to the wrist and may be present during rest. Pain may also be experienced
when gripping objects, turning your hand or swinging your arm, especially
when bending wrist backward away from palm.
Causes:
Most common cause is improper backhand stroke in racquet sports,
such as tennis; playing with a racquet that is too tightly strung
or too short; having weak shoulder or wrist muscles; any repetitive
actions that involve extending your wrist or rotation of your forearm.
Treatment:
Avoid any activities or movements that produce pain. As the injury
heals, begin exercises to stretch and strengthen the wrist muscles.
Learn proper techniques and use the right sports equipment for your
size. Immediately after activity use the RICE method (Rest, Ice,
